George Washington Begins Travel to 1st USA Presidential Inauguration
1789 While Washington had wanted to retire to his home at Mt. Vernon, VA, following his valiant service as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, he was called back to public service when he was unanimously elected by state delegates as our country's 1st President. He began his trek northward to New York on this date to make his way to the first USA Presidential inauguration.
